Head towards the sun

Tomorrow I'm leaving on a two week trip down to California to attend the Kindred Spirits opening, visit some family, and visit some redwoods. I can't wait to see those trees! I'm also looking forward to the long car ride, I always get good ideas in the passenger seat of a car. I'm going to be in a few shows in june, and an extremely busy late summer/fall (two solo shows!), so I have a lot to brainstorm about.

Also, if you happen to live in the area, the opening of Kindred Spirits is May 1st and I will be there most likely standing around awkwardly, as is my habit at openings, so come say hello!
Here is the info again:

Hear Ye, Hear Ye

Tonight is the Kickoff of the Stumptown Comics Festival and it's starting with a party and an art show/new comic unveiling by my dear friend and roommate Graham Kahler. It starts at 7:00pm at Guapo Comics and Books (6350 SE Foster Rd). If you happen to live in Portland you should come by! I will be there, probably standing around awkwardly.

Notebooks!

I just got these beauties back from Pinball Publishing the other day and they are now in my shop waiting for you! They are pretty small, just right for slipping in a pocket or purse, and unlined so they can be used for notes or drawing. Also they are made from 100% recycled papers and printed with soy based inks!

Here is the original drawing for the cover. I had a few covers started but this is the one that I became most attached to. It was somewhat agonizing but also so much fun to design, I want to make more!

Shiny Black Stars

This is what I try my hardest to do most of the time.

I just did this as an text drawing exercise for myself. Don't look too close and it looks pretty good. I wish I could do actual calligraphic flourishes but I think I need to take a class or something. (Inspiration from this digital archive)

Further Adventures

Monday has turned into official Adventure Day for my friend Sarah and I. This week we went to several Middle Eastern markets and Uwajimaya, the huge Japanese Grocery store. I absolutely love looking at all the different packaging and goods I've never tried, smelling spices and buying little treats. It was so refreshing, usually I love to cook but I've been feeling sort of apathetic about it lately, and now I'm excited about food again. Between us Sarah and I came home with so many good things: Russian and Persian tea, lavash bread, rose and orange blossom water, lentils, vegetable steam buns, Armenian cheese, saffron, and sweet limes.

Adventures

Went to the Japanese Garden last weekend. I hadn't been there in a while because it's usually a zoo. As with just about everything though it's nice early in the morning, there aren't as many people.

I matched the moss perfectly.

Outside Inside

I realized I got my promo cards a few weeks ago and never showed them off.

A friend let me cut some lilacs from the tree in her back yard, now my room smells incredible. There's nothing like real fresh lilacs, it brings back so many memories and lasts such a short time.

Kindred Spirits

I'm going to be in this show, opening May 1st at the USUF Grand Central Art Center, in California. I'm extremely excited for several reasons: a) great subject, b) my dear blog pal Marjorie is also in the show, 3) I'm actually going to be traveling down for the show, so exciting! Also, two Julianna's in one show? Amazing!

Uppercase

Until I got my copy in the mail today I had completely forgotten I submitted some foxes to this fox issue of Uppercase Magazine! It is such a beautiful magazine and I am really really happy to be in this issue. (the gorgeous cover of course is by Matte Stephens)

Book Journal

I am so excited about this new book journal I had made for the shop. It's a handy little book for keeping track of what you've been reading, all you have to do is fill in categories provided, so easy! I agonized about a cover image and was working on several but now that I see it printed and bound I am very pleased with the final choice.

Coast Day

My friend Sarah and I decided we needed an adventure yesterday. We were starting to get that trapped and stale feeling from being in town too long so we ran away to the coast. It was rainy, windy, and freezing, and we had the best time!
