Logo process

I thought it would be fun to show some of the designs I did on the way to the final version the the Naomi Ernst logo I posted a while back. First I just did a ton of sketches figuring out exactly the style of text she was looking for, these ended up being the ones we both liked the best, specifically the top one.

Next I did several variations of the text with the fox integrated into it. logo3 logo1
And with color logo2 new-logo-sketch2
In the end it was decided that it would be much of a pain to have to fit that curving text into all the printed material she wanted to use her logo on so we we went with a design that was straight across and centered. I really do love the curving text with the little fox fitted into it though!

I have to say, when it comes to text and design I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing! Everything I do I've pretty much taught myself and learned as I go along. I love doing it, it's like solving a puzzle and I think that I have okay intuition when it comes to designs themselves. Technically though I do almost everything by hand, with only some very rudimentary cleaning up in Photoshop, which means that a lot of my things have small imperfections. I hope that that makes them more interesting, but I've also been feeling really self conscious about it. I totally believe in my designs, but I do want them to get better.
I don't know where I'm going with this, except to say I've been having some career angst for about a year now and I'm not sure what to do about it! I want to get better at the things I do, and I want to do a lot of different things (which is part of the problem) but I don't know where to start. (Going back to school is not an option for me right now btw)

On a totally different note I went to see Moonrise Kingdom over the weekend and it was delightful!

Random things that make me happy today:

A a kerchief I got in San Francisco. I adore the color.kerchief
I came across this store in town here that has the most designs of washi tape I've ever seen in person! Washi tape is pretty, but expensive! I am going to use it to help package orders from my store though, so I can write it off haha!washi-tape peonies various-gardens3 Some more flowers in my neighborhood, and a surprised cat. He popped out of the garden just as I was taking a picture of the fox gloves.

Rainy Day Boating

A Rainy Boatride

Another new drawing that's in my show at Lille. It seems appropriate to post it now because the other day it rained so hard and we actually had thunder and lightning, which doesn't happen here very often!
It's actually sunny today though, and I think it's supposed to be around for a while.

This post is also to remind you that today is the last day of the print sale going on in my store! You can still use the discount code JUNESALE to get 20% off your order of prints until midnight tonight!

Rose Time

roses6
I have a million things I should be doing but I wanted to share these roses I saw the other day because they are absolutely at their peak right now! I go past this one yard almost every day that has the most beautiful old fashioned looking (I think) roses that are my favorites. They're in the most lovely soft hues and have tons of petals packed into small round blooms, and of course they smell amazing!roses3 roses1 roses5

If I had a Wolf Hound...

Wolfhound
I still haven't finished posting all the pieces from my show at Lille! This is sort of a partner to this piece. I would love to have a giant dog someday, one that is sweet but that would bark intimidatingly at anyone I didn't like...

Anyway! My drawings are going to be up at Lille though June so if you live in Portland and want to purchase one of the pieces I've posted, or just want to see them in person, please stop by the boutique!

Also don't forget the print sale going on in my store right now. 20% off your print order through Friday with the code JUNESALE!

At Home on the Range

Brandied Peaches
I got asked to contribute an illustration for the blog connected with the book "At Home On The Range" presented by Elizabeth Gilbert, originally written by her great-grandmother, Margaret Yardley Potter, in 1947.
The blog has some reminiscences of this interesting lady by her grandchildren, and they just wanted some images to go with the posts. I decided to illustrate a recipe I liked from the book, and went with "brandied peaches" because it's one of those old fashioned recipes that is simple, decadent and doesn't seem to be done much any more!
(If you interested the art used on the blog is for sale and the proceeds go to benefit ScholarMatch)

As a side note I don't often draw older ladies, and I'm not sure how successful I was here, but it was a fun challenge. I don't have that much diversity in my drawings, mostly because I know I need to improve my technical skills, but it's something I want to work on!

Treavel Log pt.3: Point Reyes

point-reyes1
point-reyes2
I specifically wanted to go to Point Reyes this time of year because I remembered the wildflowers being amazing when I was there a few years ago. I was not disappointed! At one point we were wading though a thicket of wildflowers up to our shoulders. Lucky for us it was a beautiful sunny day but very very very windy.
